Gowanus E-Waste Warehouse Residency

In the summer of 2018 I participated in a three month artist residency at the Gowanus E-Waste Recycling Warehouse, a local facility that was run by the Lower East Side Ecology Center but has since closed due to redevelopment in the neighborhood. The focus of my residency was taking the housings of discarded electronics and repurposing them into sculptural containers for flowers and plants. I have been photographing an ongoing series staging these planters as still life scenes, offering a contemporary take on the still life genre which traditionally examines symbols of death, rebirth and the transience of life. Recycling is recast here as a sort of technological metabolism, offering a hope of transmuting consumption into digestion and regeneration.
