Concept and Creativity Workshop @ Griffin Museum of Photography

Added on by Miska Draskoczy.

On Sunday, June 11th I'll be participating in a panel on creativity as part of J. Sybylla Smith's Concept and Creativity Workshop at the Griffin Museum of Photography in Boston. This two-day workshop focuses on eight specific practices within the creative process that take an idea and/or inspiration and develop it into a unique style, a project and ultimately a body of work.

Come for the full weekend workshop or you can attend just the panel portion on Sunday at a discounted price. Don't miss it if you're looking to hone your creative process, this is sure to be a workshop jam packed with useful info.

Shooting for Harper's Magazine in Gowanus

Added on by Miska Draskoczy.

Back in March I was commissioned by Harper's Magazine to shoot for a story on urban planner Eymund Diegel and his fascinating project mapping the ghost streams running underneath Gowanus. These streams are vestiges of the original watershed and to this day still flow through sewers, basements and underground passages, unbeknownst to locals walking above them. I couldn't ask for a more fun assignment releveant to my personal work and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to further explore Gowanus. Read the full article here and check out the two shots from the article and some behind the scenes shots of what went into the shoot below.

Tufts University exhibition - Man Made: Art as Environmental Communication

Added on by Miska Draskoczy.

Later this month, Tufts University will be featuring two images from Gowanus Wild in a group exhibition of environmental photographers drawn from their permanent collection. Centered around the theme of 'Art as Environmental Communication', the show will feature works from Olaf Otto Becker, Richard Misrach, Marilyn Bridges, Lewis Baltz and Frank Gohlke, a group I am very honored to be included in.

The exhibitions opens this Thursday April 21st, 5-7pm at the Aidekman Arts Center in Medford, MA. I will be giving an accompanying artist talk on the role of art in affecting environmental change and with Dr. Silvia Bottinelli from School of the Museum of Fine Arts will be speaking on the relationship between art, sustainability, and ecology. Many thanks to Boston gallery Tepper Takayama Fine Arts for facilitating Tufts University's acquisition of my work.

If you're in the Boston area, please join us for what I expect will be an interesting evening!

Gowanus Wild walking tour

Added on by Miska Draskoczy.

Thanks to everyone who came out for yesterday's Gowanus Wild walking tour! We had a lot of fun touring some of the sites I photographed for the series and comparing reality to image, as some sites are unrecognizable or completely gone now. Bonus, we even managed to score some free apple turnovers from a local industrial bakery! (no, they did not fall off a truck).

Photo Center Northwest

Added on by Miska Draskoczy.

Several images from Gowanus Wild have been chosen for the Documentary: 19th Annual Photo Exhibition at Photo Center Northwest in Seattle, WA. I'm honored to not only have my work chosen for this show by juror Whitney C. Johnson of The New Yorker but also to have won an Honorable Mention / Director's Choice Award from director Michelle Dunn Marsh. It was a lot of fun to go out for the opening weekend and meet so many other passionate practitioners of our craft. If you are in Seattle, go check it out, this is an excellent organization!.

Mapping Gowanus

Added on by Miska Draskoczy.

I was recently asked to participate in Mapping Gowanus, an interesting project of friend and fellow Gowanus resident, Marin Gazzaniga.  Marin asks local Gowanus artists to investigate one particular block of Gowanus and produce a piece inspired by what they find there.  My assignment was Douglass Street between Bond Street and the Canal.  This just happens to be the site of the recently reactivated Gowanus Canal Flushing Tunnel and so after shooting some raw material down there, an idea was born to make my first ever Vine animation.  I call it 'Infinite Flush' in homage to the flushing tunnel and you can read more about it here on the Mapping Gowanus blog.
